La plupart des ours se tiennent à l'écart des zones urbaines. Cependant, un certain nombre d'ours noirs vivent dans les montagnes autour de Vancouver et de sa banlieue.

Chaque année, on rapporte que des ours noirs fouillent les quartiers résidentiels sur les versants de la montagne à la recherche de nourriture, inspectant les poubelles, les mangeoires à oiseaux et d'autres éléments qui peuvent les attirer. Les résidents ont appris à être proactifs pour éviter de trouver un ours dans leur jardin. Les personnes parties en randonnée dans les montagnes environnantes peuvent également croiser des ours noirs lors de la traversée de forêts.
