Les peuples aborigènes ont vécu dans la région de Thompson Okanagan durant des milliers d’années. S’étendant des sables du désert d’Osoyoos jusqu’aux terres fertiles de la vallée Okanagan, les trois Premières nations de la région détiennent chacune leurs propres richesses de culture et de traditions.

Les expériences aborigènes et culturelles dans l’Okanagan comprennent des centres culturels comme celui du désert de Nk’Mip à Osoyoos et le parc patrimonial du musée de Secwepemc, près de Kamloops. Ici, d’autres expériences sont offertes comme des nuitées dans une kekuli (maison semi-souterraine) au ranch historique de Hat Creek.

Chaque année, Kamloops accueille les trois journées du pow-wow Kamloopa – le plus grand pow-wow dans l’Ouest canadien – qui célèbre la culture et le patrimoine aborigène à travers chants, danses et contes.

Experience "The Land, the Legends and the People" at Nk'Mip Desert Cultural Centre, a cultural and outdoor desert experience. View arts and cultural exhibits, audio-visual presentations and interactive displays featuring Okanagan First Nations culture and desert plants and animals.

The 22 ha site features walking trails through the sagebrush habitat, outdoor sculptures and hands-on displays. Highlights include a reconstructed aboriginal village and in the summer, daily guided walks, cultural programs and rattlesnake demonstrations. Visit Coyote's Gifts for First Nations art, jewelry, books, clothing and giftware.

Long before the Gold Rush miners, settlers & ranchers arrived in this valley, people of the Shuswap Nation followed a nomadic lifestyle here. The Shuswap Native village is staffed by members of the local Bonaparte (Stuctwesemc) Band and seasonal employees from the area. It features traditional shelters, hunting & fishing gear, cook pits & a "kekuli" pit house, built half above & half underground. Our guides will show you the crafts, tools & technologies of a self-sufficient culture that has always closely integrated the natural resources of this region into their lifestyle.
